Stuart C. Gruskin was tragically killed by a bicyclist going the wrong way down the street in New York City on April 28, 2009. The Stuart C. Gruskin Foundation, created shortly after his death, supports safe city cycling and is dedicated to safety awareness for pedestrians and cyclists.
Pedestrian-Cyclist Accidents in
New York State 2007–2010
A study completed by two Hunter College professors on behalf of the Gruskin Foundation reveals that pedestrian-cyclist accidents occur at a rate far exceeding earlier estimates of 1,000 incidents nationwide. Collecting and anlyzing data from every hospital in New York State, research shows that there are 1,000 accidents in New York State alone, more than half of these occur on New York City streets.

On February 22, 2011, Mayor Michael Bloomberg presided over the bill signing of Intro-374A, which mandates city agencies to collect and report bicycle and pedestrian incidents. The Gruskin Foundation pushed very hard for the passage of this bill.
