Hunter College Study on Cyclist-Pedestrian Accidents Released
A study completed by two Hunter College professors on behalf of the Gruskin Foundation reveals that pedestrian-cyclist accidents occur at a rate far exceeding earlier estimates of 1,000 such incidents nationwide. Collecting and analyzing data from every hospital in New York State, research shows that there are 1,000 accidents in New York State alone, and more than half of these occur on NYC streets. As the city plans to launch bike sharing program in Summer of 2012, officials need to take into account that with 10,000 additional bikes on the streets, this number could soar if an enforceable safety plan is not firmly put into place.
